Hypermiling in New Hampshire and Vermont is different than hypermiling in less mountainous, straight road areas. You cannot expect to get the same extremely high mileage results so lets set some reality checks. About the best that I get so far is around 60 mpg out of my Prius, and that is driving so the car is usable. This mileage is not for a 10 mile run, it is for a full tank of fuel. Now I suppose if you just want to get high MPG you could really make others on the road extremely unhappy. That would not be particularly useful and could really turn others off! This would not further the cause of getting people to use less carbon based fuel. My opinion is that courtesy is very important to this cause.
I have been able to get some great 30 minute runs out of my Prius. I have seen a few times that I had the entire band of indicators well above 60 MPG. These were trips that were mostly downhill. They are fun non the less. If you don't have a computer that will give you instantaneous mileage readings I would suggest that you get one. There are a few on them on the market if you Google up automotive trip computer you should be able to find one. You can find reviews on them on the net. I would read a few before you make a decision on which one to get. Here are a few links for 2 that I have found.
ScanGauge
MaxiTrip
I don't know much about either but they both look pretty good to me!
There are several techniques that I have learned through my own experimentation and through reading other sites on the web that I would like to share with you
- Slow Down!
- Look ahead and anticipate
- Let your speed drop on hills!
- Gain speed going downhill!
- Accelerate slowly!
- Be Courteous!
- Learn to coast!
Now let me get more detailed on these suggestions.
1. Slow down! This will save you soooo much on your mileage that you will be amazed. It doesn't matter what your motivation for using less fuel is, it only matters that we do. Some want to save the earth, some want to save money and yet others just want to use less fuel and cheat the oil companies out of revenue. All of these and many more a very good motivation but this is something we can all do and it costs nothing! Why are we still driving our SUV's and Pickups so hard all the time. We are just wasting fuel, money and national security!
2. Look ahead and ananticipate. This is another easy thing to do. If you see a light in the distance that is going to turn red, start slowing down let your vehicle coast to the light instead of stopping at the last minute! This is a much safer way to drive. Now I don't mean anticipate the light is going to turn red and speed up here but if you don't have to stop for a red light keep your momentum going. Don't forget that it takes energy to make your automobile accelerate and to make it stop. Braking is just turning the energy you took making your car accelerate into heat in your brakes.
3. Let your speed drop on hills! Try to learn to be gentle on the accelerato groing uphill. Use only what energy you need to use. Let your speed come down a little on the hills and regain the speed going down the other side. This way you will learn how much your car needs going uphill, use only what energy you need to keep from losing too much momentum!
4. Gain speed going downhill! When you reach the top of a hill ease back off the accelerator and gain speed slowly going down the next hill. Use as little acceleration possible to let you gain the speed you want. Remember to anticipate the next hill, you may want some extra speed for that! Ease back off the accelerator as you approach the speed you desire you don't want to gain more speed than you need this will only cost you more fuel!
5. Accelerate slowly! This cannot be stressed enough. Once you car is in motion and gaining speed don't continue to press the acceleratoror to gain speed faster. Allow the speed to come up slowly, only use more gas if you need to. This is another very big saver of gas. Also if you are on a slight incline but there is a decline coming up let the car just hold speed and gain more on the decline!
6. Be courteous cannot stress enough how important this is! If you make others upset you will never get more to convert to your way of thinking and we will not see fuel consumption drop. After all this is the ultimate goal. At the same time don't be bullied into going faster than you wish!
7. Learn to coast! This is a very important concept. When you are off your accelerator you are using the engine to slow down. When you are on the accelerator and gaining speed you are in that acceleration mode. There is a point between the 2 of these modes that you are actually trtrulyoasting. There is no drag slowing you down and there is not engine power speeding you up. This is the point of true coast. You can gain a trtremendous amount speed going downhill using this mode. You can also use this for coasting long distances to a stop sign or light! Learn to use this mode and save big!!!!!
I know that this seems like a lot but it really isn't, once you get into the mindset you will see savings, use less fuel and be helping the environment all at the same time.
