With all that has been said about the General Motors bailout I have not seen any real reporting on what that actually means to us, the real people.
In 2008 GM produced a total of 8.35 million cars, 5.37 million of those were sold outside of the US. FACT CHECK
Now this leaves about 3 million cars for sale in the USA. Please follow out my fact check link as I didn't pull these figures out of thin air. Now we have all heard that we the people ponied up 63 billion dollars to bail out GM in 2009. I think this has been reported plenty and I don't feel any real burning desire to research this fact. I did however need to research the number of vehicles built for sale here in the US. Now if we just do some simple math we can find that 63,000.000.000/3,000,000 = 21,000 yes that means that we paid a total of 21,000 for every car that GM produced in 2008.
Now I don't know about you but that makes me really mad. In June 2008 FACT CHECK the total worth of GM stock was 7.3 billion. This means we the people paid almost 9 times more than GM was worth and for what, we now are majority shareholder, yes that is correct we paid 9 time more than it was worth and we only got 50 odd percent of the company?( I do remember reports that said that total GM stock we 3.0 billion but could not find any credible link to that.) So I guess we really paid 18 times more for the stocks that we got. What a bargain. So how are other automakers supposed to compete? So how is our free enterprise system supposed to work? I recently looked at the sticker price for a Cheverolet Cobalt, it was about 15,000. Now in my very simple mind this car really cost 15000 + 21000 which is 36000 dollars. How can Ford Motor Company compete with this? Ford didn't take any bailout money. Now if you happened to trade a clunker in for this car durring the cash for clunkers program add another $4500 to that figure and we already paid $25,500 for that car before we took a loan to pay the rest. That is right that car really cost $40,500. How do you like those apples.
We will have to wait and see how this all shakes out but I would not touch a GM product with a 10 foot pole. I am so mad about how much those cars really cost that I could not bring myself to do it. Now maybe I am being too simplistic about this but it is my opinion! |
